Schmidt, Kai Werner

Absolvent, Akademie Düsseldorf, Prof. Fritsch, Prof. Kiecol

Kai Werner Schmidt’s artistic practice operates at the intersection of photography, sculpture, and installation. His work explores the dissolution of the classical photographic image while maintaining a strong connection to traditional, manual processes. A continuously growing archive of his own photographs serves as the foundation for examining the ongoing transformation of the photographic medium. Schmidt investigates how far photography can be abstracted before it loses its recognizability as such. Installations combining various media—threads, mirrors, glass, slide projectors, and scanners—expand the photographic space and challenge its boundaries.
