Fred Unruh's works are direct, raw and simple. The focus is on the dialogue between material and image making. Content and meaning remain questionable in the works. Some works elude the viewer and float. They demand their autonomy. Up close, composition and colour dissolve, and the materiality speaks for itself. From a distance, the image flickers and extends beyond the format. Other works, on the other hand, are quite tangible. They are carved pieces of wood, like a drawing in wood. The canvases are worked on from the front and back, stretching the medium of painting into the realm of the object and allowing the works to play with the quality of light and real depth. The haptic surfaces are vulnerable. They appear porous, open and raw – an emphasis on imperfection. The works are like shy mirrors; when we look at them, something looks back...
